Sev­er­al hun­dred micro­ton­al tremoli make up near­ly the entire sub­stance of Mime. These tremoli were iden­ti­fied algo­rith­mi­cal­ly: Start­ing with a list of micro­ton­al fin­ger­ings, Michael Mat­suno and I devel­oped a series of rules for describ­ing the phys­i­cal dif­fi­cul­ty of mov­ing from one fin­ger­ing to anoth­er. I then wrote soft­ware that could use these rules to iden­ti­fy all of the pos­si­ble tremoli that could be drawn from our agreed-upon list of fin­ger­ings. Find­ing an order for them was anoth­er mat­ter entirely…
